Architecture Lectures on Acoustics and Anthropology
Acoustics is a science that studies sound. The “Architecture Lecture on Acoustics 101” teaches the future architects of the Philippines about acoustics and its understanding, why it’s important, and how it can be of help and how useful it can be. This inspiring and helpful lecture couldn’t have been done without the help of the energetic speaker Mr. Rafael Ignacio Dionisio, General Manager of AVD Marketing Cooperation. This was open to all Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Interior Design students was held on December 13, 2013 at 4:00PM at the CAFA Theater on the fourth and final day of CAFA Week.
It is a requirement for the Architecture and Interior Design students to have to make sure that sound does not pass from wall to another in whatever buildings and interiors they design. Sir Dionisio explains the basics of acoustics by starting the lecture with two examples; “Imagine you’re in the cinema, and you suddenly hear sounds coming from the other cinema room.”, and “Why is it easier to talk to your date in a Starbucks coffee shop rather than talk to your date in a school canteen?”
Sir Dionisio gave further lectures on decibels: a unit of sound measuring the softness or loudness of a certain sound. Ateneo de Davao called AVD Marketing Cooperation to assist with the sounds of the school library by testing it with the use of a phone app that found the deicibels of a room. Libraries are required to be quiet and peaceful and not have sounds coming from one room to another. During interaction exercises with the students, Sir Dionisio measured the decibel of the students’ shouting voice, normal voice, and whispering voice. In another, he measured the decibel of a man’s deep voice and a woman’s high pitched voice.
Through research and application of the study of acoustics, no echoes are heard in the library room anymore. A room having no acoustics will result to the room having the effect echoes being heard when one person or many people speak. Clients would want a secure and private room, who would want to stay in a room wherein they can have a peaceful chat with their friends or conduct meeting. You may download these applications for your iOS phone (Decibel Meter, dB Volume and Decibel Ultra) and for your Android phone (Sound Meter, Noise Meter, Decibel Meter) if you would like to measure sounds in a certain room.
This lecture was sponsored by AVD Marketing Cooperation, a business that sells high-quality floor and ceiling materials and Armstrong, a supplier of AVD Marketing Cooperation that helps AVD Marketing Cooperation in doing researches.
