CEGP holds 75th NSPC

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) holds its 75th National Student Press Convention (NSPC) at Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet on May 14 to 18, 2015 with the theme “PANAGTITIGNAY: Fortifying Unities for Greater Victories against Corruption and Social Injustice.”
NSPC attends to 287 delegates from 59 student publications of the different colleges and universities throughout the country.
CEGP’s 83 years of commitment in educating journalists on the plight of the country features socio-political discussions, lectures and workshops on journalism skills and advocacy work, training on different literary genres, and exposure to the marginalized sector.
Delegates undergo Basic Masses Integration as an immersion to the different marginalized sectors of Benguet to provide a better understanding on their social and economic situation.
Speakers from national youth groups — AnakBayan and the National Union of Students of the Philippines — lead forums on the glaring matters currently faced by the state including the current national situation, role of the youth, education and its reform, and press freedom.
Joanna K. Cariño of the Cordillera People’s Alliance in her keynote address asked the student journalists, “Should you stay at the sidelines and let history come by or should you create history?”
Cariño challenged student journalists to become the movers of the society rather than mere audience of a changing world. Speakers also urged delegates to overcome the prevailing indifference and detachment to the society, and to take part in a collective movement of propagating national change.
The convention culminates on today in a cultural presentation of the different regions of the country by its delegates. Acknowledgment of excellent and outstanding student publications and recognition of their outstanding human rights program are also made through the Ernesto Rodriguez Jr. Award and the Benjaline “Beng” Hernandez Award.
