Department of Teacher Education Organizes Tikad-Kaalam 2014

In celebration of USC Days 2014, the Department of Teacher Education held the Tikad-Kaalam 2014, a Teacher’s Academic Forum in Buchcik Hall, USC South Campus today, September 8, 2014 in the afternoon.
Tikad-Kaalam 2014 has the theme “Pinulungan, Sayaw ug Kalinandang: Tulay sa Tawhanong Kalambuan,” which centralizes on how language, dances and peace-making contribute to the sustainable development of the community.
The speakers for the event were Dr. Cristie Ann Jaca-Delfin, Chair of the Department of Teacher Education; Mr. Marino Garcia; Mr. Marlon Bojos; Mrs. Astrid Ocampo; and Sr. Geraldine Villaluz, RSCJ. Guest visitors from various sectors were also present to share their insights regarding the talks: Dr. Sophie Ligaya, professor of Cebu Women Studies from the University of the Philippines (UP) and columnist from Cebu Daily News; Ligaya Rabago, Director for Culture and Arts from UP and member of National Commission for Culture and the Arts; Nestor Pacana, professor from the USC Department of History; Dr. Romy Macan, professor from Cebu Normal University and member of Pambansang Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino; and Mrs. Julie Avanceña, instructor from the USC Department of Physical Education. Students from the College of Education and other colleges also attended the event.
Delfin gave an overview of the pinulungan (language) and its uses and importance according to the society’s elderly. Garcia tackled on the dances of the Southeast Asian nations and their inclusion in the Physical Education curriculum. Cebuano dances and their characteristics were also presented: “Sinulog” was discussed by Bojos and “Pastores de Sibunga” was discussed by Ocampo. Lastly, Villaluz featured the Inay Malinandang in Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon and their opinions on how to establish true peace in the community.
The event ended with the giving of certificates of appreciation to the speakers and guest visitors, which was led by Dr. Antonio Batomalaque, Dean of the College of Education.
