The University of San Carlos’ Theatre Guild presents: “Jeep.”
ugust 21, 2013 – The University of San Carlos’ Theatre Guild gathered some of their media partners for a press conference on their upcoming stage play, “Jeep.” This took place earlier at around 9 AM at the Laguna Garden Café’, Ayala Terraces.
Director Alfe Marie Latras welcomed the guests with awarm opening remark together with a brief introduction of the activities that will take place later in the press conference.
Media and press coverage present were DYFR-FM Radio, Monster Radio and Today’s Carolinian. The actors of the actual stage play were also present and were seated before the guests in their costumes and stage make-up. They later portrayed a short excerpt of the play, “Jeep”, to give us a better understanding of what the play is all about. The play is scheduled to show on August 31 to September 1, 2013 at SM City Cebu, Cinema One.
“Jeep” is a stage play written by Manila based playwright, Christian Tordecillas. His script for “Jeep” received a Palanca Award for the year 2006. The play, now under the direction of Latras, is tailored-fit to Cebuano culture and the wonders of commuting. This will be the play’s first time in Cebu City.
The play is well relatable to its diverse audience as the jeep is considered to be one of the biggest icons of the Philippines; the jeep is a means of transportation by the common people. It introduces its audience to the different personalities we see in the jeeps everyday: the lazy, the disrespectful, the complainer and etc. The play also looks at the jeep in a different angle by relating it to politics and the country’s current situation: “What can you do for the country? – It asks its audience.
“It will be an eye-opener for the audience once they realize that somehow they were once these characters themselves.” says Benedict Yap, the play production manager.
USC Theatre Guild has tapped many major sponsors for their 38th production, “Jeep.” It will be open to students from majority of the schools found in Cebu City, including some government officials and its sponsors. Some of the proceeds to this production will reach the USC Theatre Guild’s beneficiary, The Children of Cebu Incorporation.
