USC-AS, CPS Celebrates Annual Astronomy Day

At least 70 participants from different senior high schools in Cebu took part in the day-long affair that covered career talks, a stargazing event and contests that included an astronomy quiz bowl, poster-making, jingle -making and rocket-making.
Among the participating schools were students from USC, Pajo National High School (PNHS), University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), Philippine Science High School Central Visayas Campus (PSHS-CVisC), University of the Philippines Cebu (UP-C), and Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC).
USC-AS chairman Alden Jon Carillo expressed that the event’s intention focused on raising scientific consciousness amongst the youth in his opening remarks.
“We have made it our cosmic goal to shine light and to spread the wonder of science to the students, inspiring them to become a vessel that would spread positive influence and knowledge to the community,” Carillo said. “In light of our country lagging in the field of science, it is our aim to promote the idea of astronomy and physics to help spread scientific literacy,” he added.
UP-C took the top spot in both poster and jingle making contests, while PSHS-CVC landed first place in the quiz bowl and PNHS emerged victors in the rocket making contest.
“It’s a fun feeling to be in a different campus and meet new people. I became motivated to pursue science-related fields,” USJ-R’s Daniel Joseph Valencia, who took part in the event’s rocket making contest, quipped.
The affair continued in the evening with a stargazing activity that was open to outsiders at the USC-TC soccer field. USC-AS and CPS teamed up with Indiana Aerospace University as the latter provided telescopes that aided students in further appreciating the event’s theme.
Both USC-AS and CPS will look forward to collaborating anew in laying plans to organizing this year’s USC Physics Days in March.
