USC-SSC holds first ever Abtik Carolinian

The University of San Carlos- Supreme Student Council (USC-SSC) in collaboration with the Central Visayas Network of NGO’s and spearheaded by councilors Jamil Faisal Adiong and Honeybabe Tagalog, launched the first ever Abtik Carolinian last February 17 – 18, 2017 at the Buchik Hall, USC South Campus.
Abtik Carolinian is a two-day event where Carolinians get trained to be an advocate. The first day consists of advocacy talks with distinguished experts and the second day consists of the training, workshops, planning and recognition.
“We input information and feelings of what is happening in the society especially on these advocacies, because we want to produce advocates who will champion these issues in the university,” stated Adiong.
Environment, Gender, Peace, and Health were the four main advocacies focused during the event and respective speakers for each advocacy were invited, namely: Jose Cleo Cary Solis, DENR Secretary Representative for Environment, Atty. Joyce Preston Adlao from Cebu Lawyers Association and Magdalena Robinson from Cebu United Rainbow LGBT Sector for Gender, Bai Rohaniza Sumndad – Usman from Teach Peace Build Peace Sector for Peace and lastly, Gibby Torres from the office of Senator Risa Hontiveros for Health.
On the second day, Aldwin Empaces from Central Visayas Network of NGO’s (CENVISNET) gave a lecture on how to set a development agenda, goals and objectives for a specific program.
The participants were then grouped according to their advocacies and were tasked to brainstorm ideas for their project proposals. Afterward, there was a presentation of output from the four groups, and then a graduation and awarding of advocacy champions.
The advocacy champions awarded were Jodie Cadampog for Health, Bea Abella for Gender, Hazel Bagonoc for Peace and Denxybel Montinola for Environment. The rest of the participants received certificates and the event concluded with a commitment signing and photo opportunity.
