FILSCAP on Music Composition with Yael Yuzon

The Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Inc. (FILSCAP) visited the University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus for its Composer Lecture Series last July 28, 2017 at the Rigney Hall with featured speaker, Yael Yuzon.
FILSCAP Inc. is a corporation that aims to promote, develop and educate people of local music. A few of their activities are Song Writers’ Night and Campus Caravan: Composer Lecture Series, which is now on its second year.
According to Ms. Issa Maglaque, one of the organizers, they are aiming to reach out to students to further propagate this objective. Along with FILSCAP, USC Supreme Student Council (USC SSC) spearheaded the event with its main proponent, Sharland Malazarte.
Former Rivermaya member and president of FILSCAP, Rico Blanco, opened the activity with a few remarks, and ventured on about his first advocacy as president of FILSCAP Inc. Their ongoing Campus Caravan, the Composer Lecture Series, with the hashtag #ivaluemusic, serves as an encouragement to local songwriters to pursue their craft.
According to him, Filipinos, especially the young ones, should start contributing original music or creations to the global pool. He also mentioned that is it fine to be the market when it comes to music in a global aspect, but that they should also start making something of their own.
When asked about why the slogan is #ivaluemusic in an interview, he explained, “the community of songwriters should protect and champion the value of music. When they say they value music, what do they really mean?”
Yael Yuzon, lead singer of the band Sponge Cola, was also present to share his enthusiasm for music. He is also a board member of FILSCAP Inc., and talked about song writing and his career.
He started with how he first came in contact with simple chords, his family’s support and love for music and how he went on his journey as a songwriter. He further explained how random moments made him write a song in an instant.
Afterwards, the hall was open for questions. Students asked the two speakers an array of questions that ranged from songwriting to more trivial questions.
The lecture ended with a special performance from Yael Yuzon.
As for future plans, Ms. Maglaque mentioned that they are venturing on towards schools in Manila, and that they will be continuing on what they are doing, which is to promote local music.
The two featured guests will also be present at the Vispop Series event at SM Seaside on July 29, 2017.
