SAFAD celebrates Lantawan Festival

The School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (SAFAD) celebrated its first-ever Lantawan Festival at SAFAD building in the Talamban campus last Aug. 26, 2017. The event was a grand celebration of the ten-year publication of the Lantawan magazine, gathering key people and sponsors that contributed within its publication history. SAFAD students and senior architects were those who attended the event.
Simultaneously, the Lantawan Sketch Idol is held at 2:00 p.m. wherein contestants competed to sketch and draw a company advertisement. It was participated by 10 Advertising Arts students. They were given three hours to finish the sketches before three veteran modernist architects critique on their work.
Dean Joseph Michael Espina and former dean Omar Maxwell Espina opened the event with welcoming messages. They discussed the Lantawan Magazine, its history, the success and obstacles they faced, and thanked the people who went to the event.
The first speaker, Architect William Ti from Manila, talked about his projects and brands he holds such as the Shelter magazine and the books Human Scale and Fundamentals. He also discussed how architecture engages people and how he wanted it to be barrier-free. He talked further about spatial interpretation, form-making, place making, and architecture as a social network.
“We have to rethink what markets are,” Ti said during his marketplace project presentation. He also showed his concepts and designs of the marketplace project.
Next to speak out was Tobias Guggenheimer. Guggenheimer is an architect from New York but is currently staying in Manila. He talked about the thought about communications in architecture and how architecture carries a special burden for society and culture. He said, “[Architecture] has a lot of rules [and] roles. One is the involvement with other professions and laborers.”
Concurrent with Guggenheimer’s talk, Prof. Raymundo Fernandez talked about arts and communication as well as his ancestral home in the southern Cebu province of Dumanjug.
After the talks was the podium discussion with Architects Guggenheimer and Ti, Ms. Carla Adlawan, Dean Joseph Michael Espina and Bro. Bela Lanyi. Bro. Lanyi, the editor-in-chief of Lantawan Magazine and the head organizer of the event, asked them various questions regarding on their related talks. Students were also given to ask questions to the speakers such as the problems of understanding architecture and arts, and the struggles in being an architecture student.
The event culminated in an awarding of winners of the Sketch Idol. Jacklyn Juaner got 3rd place with her sketch representing Lixil Corp. Nicole Anne Lagado placed second with her sketch representing Davies Paints and Todd Emmanuel Balbon won 1st place with his sketch representing Central Lumber. Recognition and awarding of the Lantawan Magazine sponsors and production team from previous to the current issues then followed.
