The first of many activities aimed to promote wellness in the School of Business and Economics (SBE) was held after the USC Days opening ceremony on Aug. 22, 2017. Members from the faculty and staff of the school gathered to the SBE Function Hall to launch the SBE Wellness Program through a Zumba dance session.
SBE hopes to have regular gatherings to promote wellness every Friday from now on. They foresee doing a wide array of activities, like Tai Chi and yoga, which are appropriate for the senior members that make up most of the faculty and staff. Even sports activities, such as volleyball, are being considered.
The entire program came into action under the recommendation and suggestion of Linlyn Amistad, secretary of the dean, who allegedly lost 20 pounds after taking up Zumba. This brought to light how little activity is done by the faculty and staff on a regular basis due to the nature of their jobs.
Sitting for lengthy periods and using unergonomic designs for equipment and supplies may lead to muscular-skeletal disorders, obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and more. These afflictions account for a huge amount of economic burden to the staff and school. The school’s aim with the program is to reduce the risk of these health issues and promote a healthier lifestyle and wellness in general.
“We don’t need curative. We need preventive [action],” Assistant Dean said. Dean Challoner Matero added, “Preventive and proactive.”
The program is directed towards the faculty and staff, but they will not turn away any student who would like to attend their next sessions. Although the next sessions will be held on Fridays, there is no fixed venue, as it will depend on whatever is appropriate for the planned activity.
