The 1st Sun.Star Vis-Min Interschool Cheerdance Competition was held at the Cebu Coliseum on December 12, 2015 with a total of 4 participating schools: namely the University of San Carlos (USC), University of Visayas (UV), University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the Asian Development Foundation College of Tacloban (ADFC).
The event kicked off with a raffle of gift items. Cebuano dance groups like the Dancesport Team Cebu, the Bangga sa Sayawan 2015 champion from Brgy. Poblacion, and a rising dance group called “New Cycle” also came to perform.
Mr. Bayani Garcia, the marketing head of Sun.Star, said, “[With] Sun.Star being the only truly community newspaper, it is only natural for them to hold events like these to showcase talents of the people in the Vis-Min region”. He also pointed out that many cheerdance competitions are only held and participated in by people from Luzon, so an event like this is good exposure for the Vis-Min region.
Mr. Ruf Vandolph Rosario, the head coach for the UAAP, spearheaded the judging, supported by equally-distinguished personalities in the cheerdancing field such as Dico Ili, Arnold Villanueva, Brie Escopete, Marcory Lumaban and Rashel Montalban.
ADFC was crowned as the competition champions, followed by UV in 2nd, USC in 3rd place and USPF in last.
During the interview after the competition, the head coach of the USC team said that the competition was great and that he felt the passion of all the competitors. He added that he felt proud of the USC team because, in spite of a limited time to practice, they were still able to pull off all the routines. When asked if USC would compete again, he simply gave a solid yes.
