USC Holds Biannual Research Forum

September 11, 2014 – The University Research Forum took place today at the Theodore Buttenbruch Hall in the USC Downtown Campus. It is a biannual event held to provide an avenue for faculty researchers to present findings of their recent studies. Professors, commentators and students from various departments came to attendance.

The program was divided into five different sessions namely: tracer studies, science and technology, business and economics, education and humanities, and health care.

The first Session began with the discussion of the first paper, a Tracer Study of the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics,  given by Ms. Ruvilyn M. Agujetas from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. Immediately followed by Mr. Marino A. Garcia and Ms. Astrid G. Ocampo from the Department of Physical Education with their presentation of a Tracer Study of Music, Arts, and Physical Education Graduates of the University of San Carlos College of Education: Bases for Curricular Revision and Improvement. Then, a Graduate Study among Science and Mathematics Education Majors of the University of San Carlos in the year 2000 to 2012 was presented by Mr. Monell John F. Cañizares from the Department of Science and Mathematics Education.

Dr. Paul John L. Geraldino from the Department of Biology began the second session with his discussion of the Systematics of the Philippine Mullets. The Device Modeling, Multi-Physics Simulations and Fabrication by 3D Printing Technology of Long Channel Microfluidic Structures followed which was given by Mr. Bernardino J. Buenaobra from the Department of Physics. The last discussion for the second session by Ms. Lora Mae Villegas from the Department of Chemistry, was about the Bioaccumulation of Copper, Lead and Zinc by Guppy Fish (P. reticulata) in Butuanon River.

Mr. Gerard L. Go from the Department of Economics presented the first paper for the third session, a Status Report of the Business Process Outsourcing Industry in Cebu City. The next presentation was given by Mr. Francisco M. Largo from the Department of Economics, the Prospects for Water Demand Management in Metro Cebu. Ending the third session was the discussion of Intra-Household Impacts of Climate Hazards in Coastal Communities in Bohol, Philippines (Preliminary Results) by Mr. Adrian Boyett D. Agbon from the Department of Economics.

The fourth session began with presenters, Dr. Maria Russel A. Pielago, Ms. Adela M. Romeo and Mr. Roderick C. Villaflor from the Department of Language and Literature with their presentation of Reading Comprehension Component in Grade 7 and 8 English and Filipino Textbooks. Immediately following their presentation was the discussion of National Filipino Catholic Youth Survey 2013 – Visayas Report, given by Mr. Reuel C. Yap and Mr. Jame Bryan L. Batara from the Department of Psychology. Re-imaging Christ with the Farming Community of Lusaran, Cebu City was the last paper discussed for the fourth session by Ms. Jenen B. Dellera from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.

The last session of the program started with the discussion of Household Storage of Medicines among Residents in Barangay Talamban, Cebu City by Mr. Florencio V. Arce, Jr. from the Department of Pharmacy. The next paper, Health Care Providers’ and Patient Factors: Their Influence on Antitubercular Medication Adherence in Talamban, Cebu City by Mr. Gerard L. See from the Department of Pharmacy was the last discussion for the program.

In between sessions, commentators from government departments and other universities were invited to critique the different researches. Open forums were also conducted where the audience was able to ask and suggest specific things to the researchers to improve their researches such as statistical independence, community extension services, proper presentation techniques and relevance of the study.

The program commenced with the closing remarks from Dr. Ramon S. del Fierro, Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
