The Department of Library Sciences hosted its annual E-resources Roadshow Fair at the Learning Resources Center, University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus last Aug. 25. The event is a way for faculty members and students to be connected to the partner-suppliers of the Library and a way for the department to receive recommendations on what books should be purchased next.
The fourth incarnation of this event, held annually during the University Days, the Library Department further upgraded the event by allowing the teachers to select e-books in addition to printed volumes. According to Ms. Mariñas, the serials librarian, this is a way for the Library to increase e-books and journals on their online databases.
Among the partner suppliers of the Library are EBSCO, Megatext Philippines, Libtech, Elseview, Gale Cengage, and CE Logic. Janelyn Merontos of Libtech said that the partnership between the University, despite only having started this month, has been receiving purchases from books relating to engineering and medicine.
Each supplier was given 45 minutes to present books and e-books that are available on their catalogue and to interact with the students and faculty members.
Mrs. Fe Planas, the acquisitions librarian head said that the annual target of the University is to purchase 3,000 books every year. However, due to the low fee of P600 compared to the library fees of universities in Manila that can go as high as P2,500, USC can only manage to acquire 1500-2000 books per year. Aside from the low library fee, unavailability and high costs hinder the university in fulfilling its annual target.
The Department of Library Sciences added that students can also request for new books that can help their studies by visiting the library to submit the title of requested books.
