Junior Finance Association (JFA) members from the University of the Philippines- Diliman organized the Visayan leg of the Philippine Financial Summit (PFS) in Cebu. With the help of Finance students from the University of San Carlos (USC), they were able to gather delegates from USC, UP-Cebu and Silliman University to grace the event in the Michael Richartz (MR) Hall at USC-Talamban Campus last March 4, with the theme: “Deconstructing Finance, Reconstructing our Future”.
PFS was first held in 2016 in lieu with the UP Investment Month, but was only made available in Metro Manila. This year, UP-JFA decided to take it a step higher by expanding to Visayas and Mindanao in order to attain their goal of spreading financial literacy.
JFA invited an array of speakers who can expound more on how one can utilize finance in order for it to be a key towards nation building. The roster opened with Mr. Joel Mari Yu, consultant on Business and Economic Development in the City of Cebu, Mr. John Christian Bisnar, CEO of Investagrams and Ms. Therese April Trinidad- Perez, Mutual Funds Channel Manager- Visayas of Sun Life Asset Management Company, Inc.
They were also joined by Mr. Winston Maxino, COO of Green Earth Management Philippines Corp., and Hooven Philippines, Inc., Mr.Joselito Florendo, the VP for Planning and Finance of the University of the Philippines and Ms. Annalyn Sevilla, the Undersecretary for Finance- Budget and Performance Monitoring..
Amidst the pervasive scope of poverty in the country, PFS wanted to address the problem through finance by tackling its root, financial illiteracy. As Mr. Luis Gan, the Chairperson of the Investment Month Team, has put it, one of the reasons why they came to Cebu is to “uplift the Filipinos from poverty through finance.”
From Cebu, the UP Philippine Financial Summit team shall proceed to Davao the following week to meet the Mindanao Chapter of the Junior Finance Association.
