CEGP holds 74th NSPC and 37th BSPC
With the theme “Dasig Manunuwat: Uniting Campus Journalists for Genuine Press Freedom and Social Change,” the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) holds the 74th National Student Press Convention (NSPC) and 37th Biennial Student Press Congress (BSPC) on May 19-23, 2014 at the St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary of Mindanao in Davao City.
As part of the Guild’s 82 years of dedication, NSPC is providing lectures and workshops on journalism skills and different literary genres. Delegates from different colleges and universities from all over the Philippines have gathered to represent their respective publications, to sharpen their journalism skills and as well as to be educated of the various socio-political issues that are undeniably shaded from communal knowledge.
Warm welcomes were given to the participants by the Local Government of Davao through Councilor Luna Acosta and CEGP Secretary General Marc Lino Abila. Explicit performances of the horrific experiences and tragedies of the Manobo children were also presented during the program. Forums focused on topics like National, Educational, Campus Press Freedom and Press Freedom Situations, The New Media and Culture in Crisis given in definite time spans all throughout the convention with known eligible speakers. Sarah Jane Elago, National Union of the Students of the Philippines (NUSP) President, gave a talk about the Educational Situation in the Philippines entitled “Selling Out: Neo-Liberal Policies in the Philippine Education System.”
Classroom Discussion is the most critical element of the convention where in it tackles Socio-cultural and political issues. The convention also includes Basic Mass Integration (BMI) with areas in Davao where the considered part of the Marginalized Sectors are found and the oppression of these people have experienced is overtly exposed. The delegates were also divided according to their enrolled seminars on topics such as Literature and Arts and Journalism Skills Trainings that were part of the Classroom Discussions. During the last day of the event, clusters from NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are going to exhibit their talents and demonstrate the cultural status of each respective cluster on May 22, Day 4 of the event. Also, Awarding of the Various Student Publication awards shall commence right after.
Publications were asked to actively engage in amending and revising some of the provisions of the CEGP constitution with Secretary General Abila heading the congress. The National Executive Committee is going to submit its 36th Term-End Report just as before the Plenary and Presentation of General Plan of Action. Election of New Officers for the 37th NEC is expected on May 23, Friday, as well as the Awarding of Certificates of the participating schools and Closing Ceremonies.
