ECE Students Launch PET Bottles Drive

Electronics and communications engineering students launched a PET Bottles Drive today, Oct. 7, at the lobby of the Lawrence Bunzel Building as a requirement for one of their courses under Engr. Erwin Daculan.

The program for the launching of the event began with Romeo Pascual, who is enrolled in the organizing classes, welcoming the audience and giving a short background of the drive.

Nicole Amistad, another member of the classes that spearheaded the campaign, stated that the drive mainly involves the collection of colorless polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles within the Technological Campus of the university. Amistad added that the primary objective of the drive is to promote proper waste disposal and recycling around TC.

During the program, a video by Annie Leonard titled “The Story of Bottled Water” was presented. The video showed the history of the manufacture of water bottles and discusses the negative results of the manufacturing process and their impact on the environment. Possible solutions to these effects were presented, these include the proper disposal and the recycling of PET bottles.

After the presentation of the video, Joseph Acebedo, one of the participants for the movement, led the official launching of the drive by revealing the bins to be used in storing the PET bottles. Acebedo then presented guidelines on how to dispose PET bottles in the bins.

The organizers then invited all Carolinians to join the drive with the call, “Carolinians, make us all act. Let us make a change.”

The program ended with a closing speech by Johari Villegas.

Nikka Maurice Benigno, who is also a member of the organizing classes, related that they intend to sustain the project throughout the entire academic year.

The PET bottle bins are set up in the different canteens in the Talamban Campus.
