PASIGARBO sa USC: A Week of Welcome
The University of San Carlos’ Supreme Student Council of 2013 embarked on the school year with a creative “Week of Welcome” (W.O.W) with their aim to maximize student involvement for the whole Carolinian community. What an interesting way it was to greet the freshmen as well as the continuing students and its staff back to the University.
The Week of Welcome (W.O.W) kicked off last June 10 with the Opening Mass at the Downtown Campus’ Chapel. Simultaneous activities of the W.O.W. included the Harana in both the Talamban Campus and the South Campus.
The Pahugyaw which featured the USC Theater Guild, USC Choristers, USC Dance Club and the Cebu Elite Beat boxers United happened in the Wrocklage Yard in the Downtown Campus as the Ribbon Cutting and Film showing occurred in the Talamban Campus and South Campus respectively. The 11th of June then featured the second season of Bangga sa Banggiitan: A quiz bowl where different representatives from different student organizations group together and battle out with one another to see who has the most knowledge of our world’s current news, gossip, events, etc.
The event took place at the Bunzel building lobby and started at around 2 pm and lasted for a good hour and a half with questions ranging from pop culture to academic topics. There were three rounds during the tournament: the easy round, the intermediate round, and the difficult round. At the end of each round, there was a diskartequestion asked and bonus points, depending on whether groups who chose to answer the question got the answer right or wrong, were added or subtracted. During the easy round, all nine groups were very neck and neck with each other. During the intermediate rounds, however, did the groups start showing who were capable of winning the challenge. During the difficult round, a few of the groups managed to catch up with the leaders but were still defeated.
There were three groups that held the champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up titles. The champion group consisted of Angela Vibar of Datalogics, Chilou Benitez of JPMAP, and Eric Quincy Salazar – ACES. The second place group consisted of Bianca Mae Babista of CAWSA, Lianne Rodrigo from the IE Council, and Sean Ruiz Diano of ChemSA and the third place group consisted of Jan So of the JPPha-Pi, Johari Villegas of USC CEC, and Justin Bello from USC Pathways.
Finally, the week-long event ended with the Pasigarbo sa USC 2013, a festive gathering that showcased Carolinian talents as well as unearth the Cebuano culture and its people. The event happened at the Talamban Campus BCT at 5:00 p.m.
A preshow featured the amazing talents of KSK, Acoustic Ears and Drop Decay kept the growing crowd entertained and geared up for what was to come. The preshow was, to say the least, a show in itself, riling and waking the tired souls just coming in from their classes and schoolwork.
The official start of the Pasigarbo sa USC began the invocation and followed by the National Anthem. The three major performing groups of the University then took the stage in a series of presentations. A delectable duet by Laila Mahinay and Ralph Mallapre of the Choristers, the Theatre Guild reenacted the epic battle of Mactan, with a noteworthy blood splatter by the vanquished Magellan and an exhibition of traditional folk dances by the ever colorfully vibrant Dance Troupe. The presentation of the winners for the W.O.W. contests like the Student Organization Booth Contest and Bangga sa Bangiitan then followed by an lively production number by the Dance Club, and the University Dormitory’s very own Sarcrastrics. A one-banner presentation featured the performing groups with the presentation of the banners featuring all the names of the different schools and colleges of the University with so much liveliness and presentation.
The Pasigarbo by the different colleges then followed. Each school or college of the University is highlighted with presentations from one of their own that showcased their talents. Up first was the School of Health Care Professions which showed off their singer Dawn Cortez and the dance group WeDFye. The School of Business and Economics then showcased Good Vibez and John Sepe, better known as JV Sepe which drove the crowd wild with some of them even going up to him as he sang. The College of Education then follows up with their three serenading stars, the Tres Divas. The School of Law and Governance then follows up with the band Clavinova with their mash up of songs that kept the crowds participative and active. The fired-up CAFA crew and the literally hot Fire dancers took the stage to represent the College of Architecture and Fine Arts. The College of Arts and Sciences then exhibited its talents with the a cappella group Psychapellas and the ever daring CAS Cheerdance. The College of Engineering, last but never the least, showed the best of the best with the beatboxers from Cebu’s Elite Beatboxers United and Kinesyx. Carolinian bands, Thursday Danger, Syntax, April’s Diary, Deca Dance and The Monkeys the closed the show and called it a night with an active blow-by-blow series of performances. The Pasigarbosa USC ended in a high and positive light which concluded the Week of Welcome.
The W.O.W. gave a venue for the students to let the University community see and know the different abilities and talents that they possessed. The Student Organizations gave a visual preview of their identity and activities with the W.O.W. bulletin Boards. The USC Mountaineers, YFC and Physics Society garnered first, second and third places respectively for the pinakaWOW bulletin boards. Other categories were won by the other student organizations. DynaCom won the most liked booth. The General Curriculum Students Organization (GCSO), the Students for Hospitality Organizations and Tourism Services (SHOTS) and the Chemical Engineering Society (CheS)werenamed theMost Unique Booths. The Science Education Student Organization (SESO) and the Carolinian Working Scholars Association was the Most Welcoming. The Jaycees – USC Chapter was dubbed the most interactive booth. For the BanggasaBangiitan, Angela Vibar of Datalogics, Chilou Benitez of JPMAP and Eric Quincy Salazar of ACES won first place. Bianca Mae Babista of CAWSA, Lianne Rodrigo of the IE Council and Sean Ruiz Diano of ChemSA placed second. Jan So of JPPha-Pi, Johari Villegas of USC CEC and Justin Bello of USC Pathways garnered third place.
The Week of Welcome was a fully loaded event that had four days of activities to give the Carolinian a sense of welcome and warmth, especially to the freshmen starting off their university lives and those who wish to start anew in USC. The wow-filled week was wrapped up by the Pasigarbo sa USC that captured in a few hours of energy and welcome the talents and features of the different schools and colleges that make up the University. It was truly a week to shake of the lethargy of the break and to get back to the student life.
