Political Science Department Launches Photo Exhibit on Poverty

Last Monday, March 23, the PMD 125 (Poverty Concepts and Intervention) class of the Department of Political Science, in collaboration with the Community Extension Services Office, organized a photo exhibit located in front of the USC museum at the Downtown Campus.

The exhibit aims to create awareness of the current situation and status of poverty-stricken areas in Cebu as well as the current efforts of various SVD-led institutions in bringing about change to the lives of families and children.

Photos exhibited were taken mainly from the immersion program held by the PMD 125 class in Sitio Paglaum, Umapad Dumpsite, Janssenville, Brgy. Bagalnga in Compostela, and the streets of Metro Cebu over the course of the last month.

The immersion’s goal was to expose and involve the students in regards to the multidimensionality of poverty, and also to give them ideas on what suitable poverty-reduction approach that can help alleviate poverty-stricken areas basing with their experiences.

“I am blessed and I am lucky, because I have a completely different life compared to theirs,” expressed a student.“It was really a privilege to experience it, at least I got the chance to help and to inspire and be inspired in return.”

“It is a great opportunity and a priceless learning experience for us Political Science majors, specifically Public Management Development track,” said Bonessa Ann Sotto, a third year Political Science student, “because the immersion activity made us realize that reality hurts.”

The PMD Photo Exhibit is viewable outside of the museum at USC’s Downtown Campus until March 27.
