Science, Technology and Philosophy Lecture by Dr. Mandane
A lecture forum with the theme “Science, Technology and Philosophy” was organized by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (DPRS) and the Sophia Organization at the Rigney Hall, Bunzel Building of the Talamban Campus in the afternoon last September 25, 2013.
The speaker for the event was Dr. Orlando Ali Mandane, Jr. of DPRS, whose research interest included the philosophy of science.
This lecture was an open event. Dr. Mandane described his lack of hesitation to talk on the topic since it fell under his field of competence. He discussed the birth of science, technology and philosophy. He also explained how philosophy and science were one and the same, with no clear distinctions, until the development and separation of the disciplines and fields over time. According to him, the separation of the disciplines was that of a “bittersweet separation” as the divide caused how science and philosophy are known as they are today; the division caused a rift nevertheless. He concludes with the need for philosophical activity even in the practices of science and technology for various reasons including political, ideological and anthropological reasons among others.
The lecture was then followed by an open forum with questions coming from both faculty and students and a few words from the Chair of DPRS, Dr. Ryan Urbano who was also celebrating his birthday on that very day. This activity was among others happening this week, in keeping with the TC Days 2013 celebration.
