The Mr. and Ms.
Mister and Miss TC, the most awaited event of TC Days 2013, was held at USC – TC’s Covered Court on the night of September 28. Spearheaded by Miss Kari Shawnice Amor of the CEC together with Jay Martinez of TOP Model and Artist Management Philippines as pageant director, the spectacular and breathtaking event was indeed the highlight of the TC days. The program started off with a bang-literally. A magic act was commenced to garner the attention of the audience. Members of the praised Engineering Pop-Jazz team, Kinesyx then followed with a wonderfully executed routine that left the audience awestruck. The contestants soon after emerged unto the stage in elaborate costumes. Some contestants were dressed with what seemed to be like peacocks with tails made of chic, native material. There were also a variety of sea critters, fairies, and local royalty. The male contestants sported multi-hued wings while the ladies of the competition were clad in intricate headdresses and colorful and elaborate gowns.
The contagious energy of the hosts was also quite impossible to ignore. Maria Gigante, Gabriel Arcenas and Wisdom Errua were not to be upstaged by the contestants, as they too looked sharp together with the panel of judges who did not fail to be quite star-studded as well. The panel did not leave the contestants wanting for more. After all, who better to pick out who were worthy than those who have already made it?
The contestants’ casual attires were neon-packed. The true creativity of the true contestants was brought out in the Course Wear portion – where the contestants were asked to incorporate their courses into their costumes. While some were able to use their actual uniforms, a few contestants went all out. The contestants from Computer Engineering had costumes laced with neon green lights. Judy Banares, Miss Industrial Engineering, had a giant clock on her back with her course name imprinted, in full view of the audience as she turned around. The costumes that garnered the most applause were the Hunger Games-esque outfits worn by the contestants from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Abigail Abad and Gregg Banaag. Both male and female representatives of the Department of Chemical Engineering were clad in white, the male gripping a torch of searing fire, the female wearing skeletal-looking wings that burst flames.
During the casual interview with Maria Gigante and Gab Arcenas, the contestants answered with unfaltering poise and wit. To the idea that one can never be with both beauty and brains, these people were walking contradictions.
The Theatre Guild provided an eerie interlude with a sensual heart-racing rendition of Swan Lake as the participants changed into their Formal attires. In the Formal Attire portion, the females’ floor-length gowns were all white or silver, classy and completely fabulous. There were arrays of bustiers, avant garde pieces, delicate strapless numbers and luminous jewelry embedded into fabrics.
The top five were then chosen after the minor awards were given. In this portion, the contestants were asked to pick out a paper containing a judge’s name from a small glass. The judge whose name they picked would ask them there question. This was the make it or break it stage and the contestants answered the questions with utmost intellect.
In the end, Lawrence Lim, from the Architecture department of the College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), took the crown for the men’s division while Abigail Abad, from the department of Chemical Engineering of the College of Engineering (CoE), won the crown for the women’s division.
