STEM Week: Bike For Life
Bike for life is an activity planned by the Supreme Student Council as another component of Student’s Ecological Movement week – a promotional event for a greener alternative form of transportation. It was held last September 20, 2013.
Aside from biking being a cleaner, more environment-friendly way of travel, it is also a commendable form of exercise. With the SSC’s goal of promoting healthy, environment-friendly living, biking is an activity that is fun and easy to do. With Zumba and Running Marathons taking place everywhere, biking is a more unique way of keeping fit with the benefit of travel added to the mix. The SSC stressed the essentiality of biking in saving Mother Earth.
Biking for Life was an activity remnant of last year’s STEM week that was unable to follow through due to unexpected bad weather. So the SSC decided that this year, rain or shine, Bike for Life would commence. They campaigned the event via Facebook and gathered a number of 20 participants. Bike for Life was an open event with no registration required. At 8:30 sharp, the participants gathered at a spot near Bunzel for the assembly. The Bike for Life route was around 3-5 blocks, starting from Bunzel going round to Gate 3, up to CAS and SHCP and back to the starting point.
However, due to Bike for Life taking place on a school day, only 12 bikers, including alumni, could make it. Vhonn Yurong, a first year Nursing student said that he joined the event because it was an opportunity to have fun and make new friends. From Low Rides to Mountain Bikes, those who joined Bike for Life made a diverse group united with a desire to help save Mother Earth and enjoy themselves in the process.
When asked if Bike for Life would be making the list for next year’s possible STEM week, the SSC responded positively. It should be an event to look forward to.
Every day Mother Earth is endangered by various human activities. From simply commuting to school to grave factory operations, there’s no saying how long our planet will last with no form of convalescence.
“Every day is STEM day” as the SSC says. Take this as a daily challenge to be the earth’s keepers.
