Launching of the Garden of Eden
The launching of the Garden of Eden at the Bunzel Building this September 17, 2013 was the opening part of the celebration of the Student Ecological Movement (STEM) Week 2013.
This event was launched to heighten the awareness among the Carolinian students about taking care of Mother Nature. It is not just about educating, but as well as putting hands-on participation in making up solutions to solve environmental problems. Presently, part of this movement’s helping hand to the community is cleaning up of a block in Jones Avenue, Cebu City this September 21, 2013.
Different exhibits can be seen on display at the Bunzel lobby to showcase the plants found in the Philippines, and even a photo exhibit and freedom wall – all presented by the Pharmacy Department. The students were made to take an oath to continue caring for the environment and to always remember using the 3Rs – reuse, reduce, and recycle.
Danica Villaflor, the speaker for the opening, inspired the Carolinian community to take action about the existing environmental problems and start doing it among themselves. As it is a green revolution, it must first and foremost start in one’s self, and continue to spread to others to help build a clean and green community.
As part of the weeklong celebration, a uniform exemption of wearing either green or blue was granted for the students starting September 16 to September 21. The sea of colors seen inside the USC campuses is in unison with the color of Mother Nature. STEM advocates its love for nature and pursuing the community to answer its call towards a greener living and better Earth.
STEM Week 2013 is holding different kinds of activities like seminars, film showings, Bike for Life, block clean-ups, and lastly, the STEM Night and ECOuture to be held at the USC Talamban Campus Basketball Court this September 20. The STEM Night will go with the theme of the four elements of Earth – earth, water, air, and fire.
