Thirteen delegates from the accountancy, business administration, and industrial engineering departments of the University of San Carlos attended the National Youth Business Convention (NYBC) held last Jan. 11-14, 2016 at Metro Manila.
The NYBC with the theme “Ignite Innovation, Change the Nation”, was organized by the UP Business League to gather young business students and aspiring leaders from all over Southeast Asia for an extensive 5-day summit. It was also a celebration of their centennial year as an organization in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Professional leaders and well-known corporate giants were invited to impart their knowledge and experience based on four different business tracks: management, branding, social and tech entrepreneurship, and finance.
Over 150 delegates, called the New Breed, underwent screening to be chosen to participate in networking events, company tours, and a final case competition based on their chosen business tracks.
Kimberle Kaye Tubil, a second year industrial engineering student, together with her team won first place in a branding competition in which they had to develop an advocacy for ABS-CBN. “It was fun meeting people from different schools and regions who share the same passion. I learned so much from the different speakers who shared their experiences and challenges in the business field,” Kimberle said in an interview. Other winners in the branding track were Julienne Anjela Termoso who won first runner-up and Genesis Ryan Calle and Jessica Resch who placed second runner-up.
Graduating industrial engineering student Jefferson Ombe and his team clinched the first place in a case competition for social & technopreneurship where their team developed a 3-year expansion plan for a specific business of Gawad Kalinga. “The whole experience made me realize the importance of the youth to make a great impact in the society through our field of expertise. I am really thankful that I met like-minded people who have the same passion in building their own businesses and become experts in their fields to help other people,” Jefferson said in an interview. Other winners in this track were Diether Dan Cala who won first runner-up and Vic Baquero who placed second runner-up.
Accountancy student Mackie Podunas together with his team won the final case competition for Proctor & Gamble where they had to give a management proposal for a section of P&G. Mackie said that the competition was a great avenue for all the participants to apply what they have learned about section management and the sales department of P&G.
