DPRS wins the 4th Intra-CAS College Debate Championship
The 4th Intra-CAS College Debate Championship between the Department of Languages and Literature (DOLL) and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (DPRS) was held at the Rigney Hall. The Championship round was in Modified Oxford-Oregon Format of Debate wherein the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies once again grab its fourth win.
The proposition of the debate was on the President Benigno Aquino III’s formal apology to the Hong Kong government for the events of the Manila hostage crisis. The said hostage crisis happened on August 2010 where eight Chinese nationals were killed by hostage taker Rolando Mendoza, a disgruntled former police officer.
The DPRS team was on the affirmative side while the DOLL team was on the negative side of the proposition.
In the affirmative side, Ki-Jeong “Jenny” Shim represented as the necessity speaker, Blanche Blanch as the beneficiality speaker, Cyril Jane Negapatan as the practicability speaker who also bagged the award as the Best Speaker and Gian Perez as the rebuttalist.
In the negative side, Rutchy Dahino represented as the necessity speaker, Nika Aguilar as the beneficiality speaker, Ushabelle Bongo as the practicability speaker who garnered the Best Debater Award and Czarina Brigoli who also received the Best Rebuttalist Award.
The honorable judges of the debate championship were: Mr. Don Navarro, the chairman of the board, Msgr. Dennis Villarojo and Mr. Kristian Caumeran. Also, Ms. Kay Canales served as the moderator of the debate.
The championship event was organized by the SOPHIA Organization in cooperation with the USC CAS Council. It ended with the debaters shaking each others’ hands and a round of applause from the audience.
