Local Music Scene: The Ginsync
Ginsync is a band composed of 5 talented musicians: Victor Emmanuel Cabral on vocals, Paulo Anthony Espantaleon rhythm guitarist, Allen Jesser Caroro the drummer, Karl Kangleon the lead guitarist, and Marvin Olmoguez their bassist.
All of them are graduates of the University of San Carlos- South Campus. The band started with merely home jam sessions between vocalist, Emmanuel Cabral, and drummer, Allen Caroro with accompaniments then limited to the acoustic guitar and a microphone. The three other members Paulo, Karl, and Marvin were later invited to join them in their jam sessions simply to hang out, play music and have fun with it which consequently put the band in full swing in 2005.
The boys initially never had serious plans about forming a music group. Emmanuel Cabral says they simply considered forming the band because it was their hobby to just play the kind of music they love, form a closer friendship with each one, entertain themselves through their passion for music, and to be able to share their talents with others through gigs and gatherings.
Before the band was officially named Ginsync, they were called “Pulang Kabayo” which literally meant “red horse.” This was inspired from a street name in a neighborhood of one of the members. Having no serious intentions to be an official band, they went with anything and settled for a funny name to call themselves. One member shared that in his childhood days, he dreamt of having a band named GINSINK—sink, such as kitchen SINK, but Paulo, the rhythm guitarist, actually thought it was nice to call themselves GENE SYNC, “genes”, for their inborn nature and fondness for music, and SYNC as of the synchronization of the music they produce. In the long run, they decided to mix up the names from both GINSINK and GENE SYNC and came up with what they now call themselves: GINSYNC.
As a band, they ardently follow the music principles of their idols and role models, Original Pinoy Music (OPM) icon Chito Miranda, and the rest of the members of the popular band Parokya ni Edgar. In fact, most of the songs Ginsync plays are those of Parokya ni Edgar’s. They truly believe in the messages behind the lyrics of the numerous songs of Parokya ni Edgar including this excerpt from a song titled “Yes Yes Show”:
“Sandali lang wag muna kayong maglaban
Bago kayo magsuntukan
Ginsync’s genre is OPM alternative rock. Aside from the popular OPM band Parokya ni Edgar, they also look up to bands such as Rivermaya and the Eraserheads. Their music group would also explore other music genres like reggae and roots—the genre category they played during the 2013 Students Night: Battle of the Bands wherein they won as champions.
It’s undeniable how close-knit this band has become—having shared goals and ambitions with one another and their plans to succeed in the local music scene together. They dream of being an undercard or an opening act for Parokya ni Edgar and be a professional band in the near future. They also aim to share their passion to the big world someday making them popularly known by the people saying, “Hey, that’s GINSYNC!”
