The Public Management and Development (PMD) track, together with the Political Theory and Systems (PTS) track and the Department of Political Science concluded its second Young Public Managers and Developers Summit last Friday, 14th of March, at the Buttenbruch Hall, USC Downtown Campus. The summit was a two-day event in which various speakers from different sectors of the society were invited to speak in front of citizens, most especially students, about Climate Change and the things we can do for a greener environment.
The aim of the Young Public Manager and Developers Summit, according to four of its principal organizers, is to look into the important role of social media in the popularization of environmental policies and programs as well as in the operationalization of netizens in concrete actions.
The summit served as an avenue to uncover the interface of climate change and social media. It conducted a public discourse and workshop on how young Cebuano public managers and developers can take the lead in coming up with action agenda for climate change.
The topics tackled on the first day were #NetizensInAction for Climate Change with speakers Ms. Rafaela Jane Delfino, Researcher, OML Center Science for Climate Resilient Communities and Hon. Nestor Archival, Cebu City councilor and Chair of the Committee on Environment. Mr. Leon Flores III, Commissioner of the National Youth Commission also talked about the contribution of the youth using social media as a means to promote programs and activities that would lead to a better environment.
The second day of the summit was covered by MyTV and SunStar. The first speaker, Burt Dimaunahan, Territory Sales Head-Broadband, Globe Telecommunications, spoke about the technological aspect in how netizens can make use of social media to apprise themselves about the weather conditions. The second topic was #NetizensInAction for Climate Change which was co-presented by Mr. Baltazar Tribunalo and Engr. Oscar Tabada, Head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management of the Province of Cebu and PAGASA-Visayas Chief Meteorologist, respectively. Mr. Vince Loremia, Co-founder of Tudlo, a mobile application that is specially designed to solve issues of every individual that has to deal with with on Traffic, Road Conditions, Emergencies, Disasters, Catastrophes and other unexpected events in human life. Tudlo platform is an end-to-end solution where content publishers provide relevant guides on traffic, road conditions, emergencies and disaster; government agencies submit news feeds; concern citizens report events; locator on key establishments such as clinics, hospitals, police station and evacuation sites; and provides analytics and statistics on every situation.
With the different calamities nature has brought to the country the past few months, the event was timely as it allowed the participants to mobilize and keep themselves updated through the use of social media.
The two-day summit was sponsored by Globe, RAFI, and Nature’s Spring and was actively participated by students from UCLM, UC-METC, CIT-U, and students from various courses in USC.
